The development of new technologies in automotive parts shows several major trends: deepening development; increasing generalization and standardization of parts; increasing electronic and intelligent levels of parts; lightweighting of vehicles and parts becoming a future development trend; and clean and environmentally friendly technologies becoming the commanding heights of future industrial competition. For a certain period, the Chinese auto parts industry still has many shortcomings, such as a poor industrial base, unreasonable structure, insufficient R&D, and lack of famous brands, all of which are old issues. During the 11th Five-Year Plan period, the National Development and Reform Commission took the comprehensive improvement of the competitiveness of the automotive parts industry as the main goal of guiding the industry. Now that the 12th Five-Year Plan is about to be introduced, auto parts companies need to further improve their core competitiveness.
Mergers and Acquisitions
In the face of market competition, the auto parts industry needs to accelerate the pace of industrial mergers and acquisitions. Without the emergence of large parts companies, China's auto parts will not have a voice internationally, and procurement costs will not come down. Domestic parts companies are small in scale, weak in strength, and lack R&D capabilities. Under such circumstances, if the parts industry wants to develop rapidly, it must accelerate mergers and acquisitions to achieve economies of scale.
During the 11th Five-Year Plan period, the mergers and acquisitions of vehicle manufacturers provided conditions and useful references for parts companies to implement industrial integration and optimization and upgrading. Parts companies should seize the opportunities and follow the trend and inevitability of industrial development, consciously and proactively carry out various forms of cooperation and alliances to improve specialization and scale.
Increase R&D
According to information from relevant institutions, Chinese parts companies ranked among the top in R&D are very rare, and there are almost none among the top 44. In the face of the huge investment in R&D by multinational parts companies, domestic independent auto companies should be aware of the crisis and quickly make up for the shortcomings in R&D.
Systematization
According to the development trend of system development and modular matching, parts companies should establish long-term strategic partnerships with vehicle manufacturers, first establishing and forming an auto parts supply system for independent brand vehicles. Taking commercial vehicles and economical passenger vehicles as a breakthrough point, actively participate in the product development of vehicle manufacturers, integrate related parts resources, continuously improve the development level of system parts, gradually establish a complete parts production system and product standard system, and form the ability of systematic and modular parts matching. In this regard, the government should provide policy support to small and medium-sized enterprises.
Going Global
For a certain period of time, some Chinese auto and parts companies have gone global. The strategy of Chinese auto parts companies improving their technical strength through overseas acquisitions and breaking the situation where foreign companies control key technologies and markets is becoming increasingly clear.
